“The Cowles Commons project was the culmination of many years of design and fundraising for this important revitalization of a civic space in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. An interactive fountain was the centerpiece of the project. Early on in the design process we recognized the need to work with an established, reputable fountain company. The architect had detailed a beautiful fountain, unfortunately the cost to build the fountain was greater than the project budget could afford. The Weitz Company needed a fountain contractor who could come in and work with the architect to modify the design that maintained the design intent while also fitting within the project budget. Outside the Lines (OTL) was able to work directly with the designer in a collaborative manner to help determine a revised design that ultimately fit within the project budget and allowed the project to move forward. “OTL was contracted to build a rock feature that replicated the amazing work they did previously at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. As the designer it was hard for us to write a specification or produce drawings of something the park owner already knew in existence and had a keen eye for the finish product. We were able to produce a picture of what we wanted and the OTL team was to work off of that. Needless to say we were extremely pleased with what our end product turned out to be and far passed our expectations for the building process. Jack Larsen and the design/creative team were a pleasure to work with. Every step of the process was carefully detailed and looked at by our design team. Due to having fountains that interfaced with scopes of work from our scope, as well as another general contractors and also various design work packages, OTL’s management was vital in coordinating all aspects to ensure a successful delivery. Their management staff provided construct-ability feedback on our concrete forming systems where Oakland had to construct linear and elliptical concrete walls with an embedded fountain piping system. These tolerances were basically zero and OTL continued to work with Oakland through the end on necessary adjustments to the system to make the product perform well and cast the water plumes in an array of beauty. We also relied heavily on OTL to help constructively resolve coordination issues with the electrical design that was also under our scope and OTL did this with the same care and professionalism as if they were your own subcontractor.
